Desquamation

Desquamation, or peeling skin, affects most babies in the first few days of life. How to treat it: Apply a moisturizer to the skin.

Head gneiss

This is a crusty, greasy rash on the scalp that often occurs in newborns and slightly older babies. It is caused by a buildup of sebum (an oily substance produced by glands in the skin) that causes skin cells to stick together instead of shedding normally. Cradle cap can appear on the scalp alone or along with a rash in the diaper area, neck, or underarms. How to treat it: Apply a massage oil or nourishing body lotion to loosen the crusts.

Infant eczema / atopic dermatitis

Eczema looks different in every baby. In babies with fair skin, it usually appears as red patches on the skin. In babies with darker skin, the rash may look purple, brownish or grayish. These patches are almost always dry, itchy and rough.

It most often affects the cheeks and the joints of the arms and legs.

Causes: Problems in the skin barrier that let moisture out and germs in.

How to treat it: Apply a prebiotic skincare product to strengthen the skin's barrier function.
